Understanding RTI and SST
Response to Intervention (RTI) is an ongoing process of using student performance and other data to guide instructional and intervention decisions. It is broken down into 4 Tiers:
Tier 1: Academic and behavioral strategies are routinely use at the first sign that a student is having problems in their classrooms.
Tier 2: If the student is not making adequate progress towards grade level standards despite classroom supports, the teacher may refer the child to the school’s Response to Intervention (RTI) team to collaborate with other professionals and provide research-based strategies. A practical, research-based plan to address those student concerns is developed and implemented. Data is then collected to monitor progress.
Tier 3: If data provided by the Tier 2 team indicates the student is not making adequate progress in response to the intervention(s) provided, a referral is made to the Tier 3 RTI team for more individual, intensive intervention. Data is also collected to monitor progress. At this time, the RTI team meets with the parent(s) to share data and collect more detailed information about the child.
Tier 4: If the RTI team determines after trying several individualized intervention plans that a student has not made sufficient progress, the school may refer the student to Tier 4. At Tier 4, students may need to go through a formal evaluation process, which includes specialized testing. The team then determines if they meet eligibility requirements for special education services due to a need for specialized instruction.
How is the Student Support Team (SST) related to RTI?
The SST is the school-based team that carries out this process at the Tier 3 level in most public school systems.
Things to Remember:
- A RTI meeting is different than a parent/teacher conference.
- A RTI meeting will usually include: your child’s teacher, the SST Chair, and possibly another member of the school such as the guidance counselor, the school’s social worker, and/or the school’s psychologist.
- The SST team will make decisions about which interventions to use, who will complete the interventions, how will the progress be measured, and the timeframes. The SST Chair will be documenting the steps that will be taken. The team will schedule a follow-up meeting in approximately 4 weeks, so remember to note the date.
- During follow-up meetings, the SST team will determine what interventions are working and decide whether:
– What interventions need to be adjusted
– If screening is necessary to develop appropriate interventions
– If consultation is warranted with other school professionals
– If a referral for a comprehensive evaluation is needed
Make sure to document all meetings and keep a record of every document that you receive. And remember you are part of the team also, so do not be afraid to give your input!
