Many special needs children have sensory issues. As a result, Target launched a new apparel line of adaptive clothing for special needs children. This is an affordable, sensory-friendly line that will
start with [their] core tees and leggings, and address guests’ most common requests — like removing tags and embellishments that can irritate the skin. [They] also added more ease through the hip and a higher rise in [their] leggings to fit with diapers, if needed, for older kids. 1)CNBC
Target being the first major retailer to launch a line specifically designed for special needs children 2)AL.Com, will expand the line in the fall to include pieces with zip-off sleeves and side openings that make dressing easier and pieces that open in the back for children lying down or sitting.
This is a big win for special needs parents as some adaptive clothing can be quite expensive. With Target’s pieces ranging from $4.50 – $7 in children’s sizes XS to XL and toddler sizes 2T-5T, parents will be able to choose from a range of pieces at moderate prices.
Even though adaptive clothing is at the forefront now, it has come a long way. Special needs children and adults with disabilities who have sensory issues have found it challenging to obtain proper clothing to make them feel good and that fits appropriately. This is why retailers who sell adaptive clothing, outerwear, weighted vests and shoes were needed to meet consumers with special needs.
Now, there are a variety of retailers that offer adaptive clothing. While a popular company like Fun and Function sells sensory clothing items, such as Under Huggers, Weighted Fleece Hoodies, Weighted Compression Vests and Hugging Tees, there are many other companies that specialize in adaptive clothing for all ages. The following is a list of companies that offers adaptive, sensory and specialized clothing for children and adults with disabilities.
