Book Description: Are you new to the world of special education? More and more parents are and they struggle to find out how to be more successful in the special education process. Unfortunately, for many special needs parents this is not always an easy task for many reasons. This book was created to provide new and veteran special needs parents with essential information to make sure their child is successful in the school system no matter ability or disability.

Excerpt:
What If My Child’s IEP is Out of Compliance:

Getting through an IEP meeting can be such a relief. You finally feel that you have a plan for your child and your child will now receive the services that they need. However, participating in the development or update in your child’s IEP is only the first part. The second part is making sure that it is being implemented appropriately. Sadly, this is where many parents drop the ball. They rely too much on the school system to make sure that their child’s IEP is being implemented, instead of staying contact with your child’s teacher to make sure you know what is going on in the classroom. Once your child’s IEP is developed, the school district must provide the services listed in the IEP right away.

Reviews:

If you are a parent of a child who has been diagnosed with some sort of difficulty that would lead to the development of an IEP, this book is definitely a useful and worthwhile guide, without a doubt.  There is a great deal here to appreciate as well for other audiences, as the author is clearly trying to bridge the gap between special needs educators and parents, a relationship that seems especially fraught with mistrust.”

If you are confused about the system or want help navigating it in order to stay on top of your child’s care, you should really buy this book. It is brilliant, thoughtful and incredibly useful.” Building Blocks Magazine Winter 2017 – 2018

Book Description: Have a Great School Year: A Guide for Special Needs Parents is a reference that will give parents the steps they need to help their child succeed during the school year. Since navigating through the special education process can be intimidating, special needs parents should make sure their child is receiving and continuing to receive special education services that are appropriate for them. This can only be done by staying up-to-date with Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) and being involved during the school year.

Excerpt: Choosing the Right Advocate

Choosing the right special education advocate can be critical for your child’s success. You want to find a person who is very knowledgeable of the special education process, but ultimately one who understands the unique needs of your child. When seeking a special education advocate, it important that you ask the right questions for your child’s specific needs. Even though there is no current licensure or certification for advocates, many advocates take training courses and stay abreast of the special education process, laws and procedures. Advocates also attend conferences and workshops to keep their knowledge diverse and valuable.”

Review:

This well-organized book is both smaller and thinner than The Journey of Special Education, which makes it easier to carry with you, but is by no means less informative. It contains everything you need to know and more.” Building Blocks Magazine Winter 2017 – 2018
