Do you know how to start a website? Websites are essential for businesses. In today’s market, if you do not have have a website you probably will be looked over by your potential consumer or client. Starting a website can seem overwhelming, but it does not have to be. Today, you will learn how to start a website in 5 easy steps.
Decide on Your Business Name
This is a very important step when starting a business. You want to make sure you business name is not already taken and it fits your style of business. To make sure your business name is not taken, Google it. This is a crucial step not just to see if the name is already taken but also to see if you will be competing for Google rankings alongside other businesses with similar names.
In addition, your business name will turn into your domain. A domain is your address on the internet. There are many places to check your domain. You can do so here.
Purchase Your Domain and Hosting
You can purchase your domain through your hosting company, as hosting companies offer domain/hosting packages. Your hosting company is where your the server, files and databases of your website are hosted. You have to have hosting in order to have a website.
One company, I recommend for hosting is Bluehost. They offer a free domain address and 24/7 support exclusively WordPress users.
They also offer 3 packages that range in price. If you will be uploading a lot of content, photos and videos, it it best to stick with the Plus or Prime Packages.
Once you select your package, it is time to enter your domain name or an existing domain (one that you have previously purchased).
After you select a package, Bluehost will now guide you through the steps of installing Wordpress on your new website. At this point, you have reserved your domain address, paid for your hosting and installed WordPress!
If you have already bought your domain through another hosting company and need to connect to Bluehost, follow these instructions.
How to modify your DNS Nameservers when you are using Go Daddy for your domain and Bluehost for your hosting:
- Log into the GoDaddy.com Account Manager.
- Select Manage Domains from the Domain Names drop-down menu or the Manage Your Account list.
- Select the domain name you wish to modify using the checkboxes and then click Set Name Servers.
- Enter your updated name server information in the spaces provided under the blue Name Servers heading on the right side of your page and click Save Changes at the bottom. Your entries should look like this: ns1.bluehost.com; ns2.bluehost.com.
Next add the domain you bought (such as through GoDaddy) as an addon domain to your Bluehost web hosting. You can do this by clicking on “Domains” when logged into your Bluehost web hosting account and then clicking on “assign.”
Login to Your New Website
Once you have completed all the steps above, you will receive an email from your hosting company confirming your information and an email from WordPress with your new login information. To login into your new website, your web address will be similar to http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin. You will use the login credentials that you received in your email to login to your new site.
Choose Your Theme
Now it is time to get creative! This is the chance for you to really brand your website and business. If you want to keep it basic, WordPress has many free themes. However to really maximize your business website, you want to purchase a theme. To find a theme, you can visit MOJO Marketplace and find hundreds of WordPress themes to fit your needs. If you prefer Genesis themes only, then you can purchase a Genesis theme here. Keep in mind that you will also have to purchase the Genesis Framework.
Step 5: Install Your Theme and Get to Work
After you have chosen and bought your theme, it is time to install it. If you purchased you theme on MOJO Marketplace, you will download the THEME FILES under MY PURCHASES. The file will be a .zip file.
Next, you will login to your website at http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin. Once you are logged in, you will click on APPEARANCE on the left hand side and then THEMES.
At the top of the page, you will click on ADD NEW, then UPLOAD THEME. Here you will upload the .zip file that you downloaded.
After you have uploaded the theme and activated it, you are ready to customize to your liking!
