It is common for many special needs to children to have trouble behaving in the classroom and at home. To understand the root cause of the behavior, it is helpful to develop a functional behavior assessment, or FBA. A functional behavior assessment is an approach that uses a variety of techniques to understand what is behind the problem behavior. This is important because knowing what’s behind the problem behavior can help you figure ways to change the inappropriate behaviors. At the end of a FBA, a behavior intervention plan, or BIP, is written to outline a plan to replace problem behaviors with more positive ones.
